"William was educated at the Fall Branch Seminary, and the Jefferson
Acadamy at Blountville.
At age 18 William left the family farm and on December 11, 1859 went
to Blountville, Tennessee where he became a clerk for John Powell. In
January of 1859, he became a clerk for James and Seneker at Bristol, and
in January 1861 he entered the store of R. T. Lancaster. In June 1861,
William joined Company G, 19th Confederate Tennessee infantry and
afterwards was transferred to Captain Jacob Hamilton's (his brother's)
Company K of the 29th Tennessee and became a 2d Lieutenant, later a 1st
Lieutenant. His health compelled him to return home, and in March 1863
he resigned his command. In December 1864 William was captured in East
Tennessee and placed in the hospital at Knoxville where he remained until
February 1865. In 1866, William left Bristol and went to Christian
County, Kentucky but after four years farming returned to Bristol and was
variously engaged until 1876 when he opened the Hamilton House. In 1882
he bought the brick property on the Virginia side of Bristol , and
continued his hotel until 1883 when he leased the Nickels House. Three
years later he came to his present building where he is doing a large
business in the only first class hotel in Bristol." This is reported to
have been the most popular hotel between Knoxville and Lynchburg.Monday, Oct 13, 1879, the family of Gen. U. S. Grant (father, son and
spouses) spent the night at the Hotel for a total fee of $8.85.Source: Mary Hamilton who cites Goodspeed's East Tennessee History, p.

William married Catherine Price Roach [scrapbook] "Kate", daughter of Parson Elijah White Roach and Nancy Richarson Harvey, on Dec 24 1861 in Charlotte County, Virginia. Kate was born Dec 20 1839 in Charlotte County, Virginia. She died Aug 17 1924 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was buried in Bristol, Virginia.
Emma Baker remembers "Big Fat Grandma" (actually her great-grandmother)
visiting her home on Anderson Street in Bristol, Tennesse. "Her ample
body filled and overflowed the doorway. The story is told that she was
once 'churched' from the First Baptist Church of Bristol for 'dancing a
jig,' which she also performed in our doorway."William and Kate were married on Christmas Eve, 1861, by her father,
Parson Elijah White Roach, a Baptist minister. One source says the
marriage occurred in Goodson (Bristol), Washington County, Virginia. How did Kate, a girl from Southside Virginia, meet and marry a boy from
Hawkins/Sullivan Counties, Tennessee? The biography of Elijah Roach by
William Wistar Hamilton, Kate's son, states that his grandfather traveled
far west in his preachings, including to Tennessee. Note also that
Elijah's uncle, Samuel Williamson, moved to Giles County, Tennessee; but
this county is in south central Tennessee, far west of Hawkins and
Sullivan Counties in the eastern point of that state. In any event, one
can speculate that Kate may have accompanied her father on a preaching
trip to Tennessee and met William there. One alternative is that William
may have met Kate while serving in the Army in Virginia, but the former
seems more likely.

66. Harvey Hicks Hamilton (William M. , William Robert , William Robert , William , John William ) was born Jan 24 1818 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He died May 28 1897 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.
Harvey, who suffered from "white swelling" or tuberculosis, was
persuaded as a boy to accompany his uncle Harvey to Kentucky. Sometime
later he returned home for a visit, traveling from Lexington on foot,
from house to house, referred by one lady to another, carrying a note of
introduction from each, until he arrived home in Tennessee. Arriving at
Blountville, Harvey found his father and brother working in the fields.
Thinking the boy was a stranger, they exchanged greetings and began
questioning him. The brother recognized Harvey and told him to take his
hat off, whereupon his father said: "I'll be doggone if it ain't Harvey."Burial: 1897, Mt. Carmel Cemetary, Hawkins County
