was John Bell: Whig candidate for President in 1860 against Breckinridge
and Lincoln. Was Secretary of War, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, and member of Tennessee General Assembly.John Bell Hamilton was a farmer and a stock trader and owned a great deal
of property in both Hawkins and Sullivan Counties. He was sheriff of
Sullivan County and elected representative to the Tennessee General
Assembly (1846-47). He and Elizabeth resided in Hawkins County until
1826 when they moved to Blountville, Sullivan County, Tennessee. Member

Harvey was a physician, studying under his father. Family tradition
states that Harvey was so taken by a chance meeting with Daniel Boone
that he moved to KY to practice medicine. After Harvey's death, Lydia
moved the family to Sullivan Co., MO. 120 MAR 1830 - 20 DEC 1832, Harvey
deeded to Jarrett B. Hamilton, 50 acres on the northside of Bays
Mountain, west of Blair's Gap beginning at the southwest corner of Robert
Hamilton's 25 acre survey (Bk 13, pg. 167-169).Harvey is a common name in the family, tradition stating that a Hamilton
studied with the famous surgeon Sir. William Harvey. This Hamilton named
a son Harvey

brother, John Bell HAMILTON). William and Matilda had 12 children.
Around 1850 they moved their family from Hawkins Co., TN to Washington
Co., VA.
Family farm was on North Fork of the Holston River, five miles east of
Mendota, Washington County, Va. Most of this family is buried at Alum
Wells, Washington County, Va. about ten miles down Valley from Abingdon.
William married Matilda Hicks, daughter of Stephen , Jr. Hicks and Elizabeth Cox "Betsy", about 1813 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Matilda was born about 1794. She died after 1860 in Washington County, Virginia.
