1. John William Hamilton was born about 1665 in Ireland. He died before Nov 1 1749 in Shankill, County Monaghan, Ireland.
John William Hamilton served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy for 12
years. He married an unknown woman in 1695. Oral tradition asserts that
John William was favored by the Crown and was granted a Scottish
lordship.
His sons William and Robert were banished from the Kingdom
because of their sympathies towards the Irish rebels and sailed to
America around 1755 with their wives and children.
His Will was proven 01 NOV 1749 in Shankill, Co. Monaghan, Ireland,
and names five sons as beneficiaries, and an unnamed wifeInformation provided by Lovetta Wood Carson who obtained it from Patricia
Scruggs Trolinger during a ten year correspondance. That information was
passed along to Sandy Rowe by Mary Hamilton in February, 1999, and then
to me in August, 1999.
I have (writes Mary Hamilton) 3 family histories (John Bell Hamilton, II; Rev. Hale Snow Hamilton; Nan C. Cox Ford) and they are relatively the same but different at times. From the accumulation of information from various family members, the 3 family histories and documented fact, I have come up with a scenario that I believe is close to an accurate depiction of this family. It is by no means infallible and is subject to correction as need be.---------------------------------------------------------
The authority of the English crown was eventually restored over the
entire island during the 16th century by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, who
also attempted to suppress the Roman Catholic church.
The lords of Ulster long challenged British rule. In 1607 scores
of Celtic chieftains fled from Northern Ireland forever. This "flight of
the earls" marked the end of ancient Celtic Ulster. Britain declared the
earls guilty of treason and seized their great estates. James I sent
Scottish and English colonists to settle "plantations" on the seized
land. Presbyterian and Episcopal churches appeared in a country that had
been wholly Roman Catholic. A general uprising in Ulster by the Catholics
against the Protestants occurred in 1641, and thousands of colonists were
murdered or forced to flee. Irish confederate armies could offer little
resistance to the English forces led by Oliver Cromwell. By 1652 Irish
resistance had ended and power remained with the Protestants.---------------------------------------------------------
